Overview

JVS works with employers to develop training and internship programs for job-seekers. These mutually beneficial programs:
     o   Are designed to fill employers’ hiring, community service, and other business needs
     o   Help job seekers gain skills that enable them to be successful, long-term employees
     o   Are free of charge to employers and job seekers

The training programs we offer are highly customizable and are designed to fit the needs of our employer partners. The typical program structure is as follows:
     o  Duration: Typically 2-8 weeks in length
     o  Training at JVS: Includes industry vocabulary, conceptual material, company information, career progression opportunities, etc.
     o  On-site Internship at your Organization: Participants gain skills by job shadowing and/or participating in employer responsibilities.  JVS provides on-site teachers and/or mentors as needed.
 
Customizable program parameters include:

     o    Material covered
     o    Level of JVS staff involvement

Current Partnerships

Bank Teller Training with Rockland Trust and Santander Bank and TD Bank
In partnership with TD Bank and Rockland Trust, The Bank Teller Training program launched in 2014. The seven-week training includes instruction on bank product offerings, teller responsibilities, the banking industry, bank safety, customer service, cross-selling skills, and job search skills. Staff members from the partnering banks participate in the program by leading workshops, presentations and conducting mock interviews for the students. Program graduates receive career coaching services to assist in finding employment at a bank or other financial institution. The goal of this training is to offer an opportunity for career advancement to individuals who have work experience in the U.S. and are seeking a professional entry level job.

Food Service Training with the Long Wharf Marriott Hotel

JVS partners with the kitchen at the Long Wharf Marriott Hotel to offer an eight-week food service training to prepare participants for a range of kitchen positions including Prep Cook. Our partnership with the Long Wharf Marriott kitchen started in 1988 and has included over 30 training sessions. Two days a week, participants train in the Marriott kitchen to learn knife skills, food preparation skills, how to follow recipes, and gain real-world experience in a professional kitchen. Participants also engage in weekly classroom instruction on ServSafe material such as proper hygiene, temperature control and food safety. At the end of the training, participants take an exam for the nationally recognized Servsafe Food Handler Certificate. Graduates of the program are prepared to work in a range of kitchen positions and have been hired at a wide range of companies in the food service industry. This training is limited to participants in JVS’s Refugee Employment Services, and therefore does not accept outside applicants.”

Hospitality Training with Homewood Suites, Courtyard Marriott, and Hostelling International

JVS partners with three hotels in the Boston area (Arlington Homewood Suites, Courtyard Marriott at Copley Square, and Downtown Hostelling International) to train participants in the hospitality industry in this intensive four-week training. Participants engage in one week of classroom instruction at JVS in hospitality and guest service skills, followed by a three-week job shadow program at one of our partner sites in the areas of housekeeping, houseperson, front desk, laundry and food service. Participants also attend JVS once a week during the job-shadowing component to work on resumes, interview skills and the job search process. Graduates of the program are prepared to begin careers in the hospitality industry and other similar work environments.

Program Outcomes

We have run several successful programs over the last 15 years in partnership with multiple different employers.Over 90% of participants are placed in jobs following completion of the program, many of whom are placed in industry-related positions. All of our employer partners have hired graduates of the training programs which were run at their facilities. Many of these graduates continue to work with our employer partners and are wonderful additions to their teams.

Hospitality Training - Client Success Story
In 2011, Maude came to America from Haiti with her son and daughter to be reunited with her husband, who had come to Boston in 2004 to establish a better life for the family. After settling in, Maude’s first priority was to find steady work.  Her husband, who had taken JVS’ English classes, suggested she go to JVS for help. 

Maude quickly enrolled in the English program, and four months later, was accepted into JVS’ Hospitality Job Shadowing Program, which prepares participants for employment opportunities in the hospitality sector. After receiving training in job readiness, computers, and customer service, Maude shadowed hospitality staff at the DoubleTree Bayside Hotel. Hotel managers were impressed by Maude’s work ethic and dedication, and upon graduating from the program, she was offered a position as Room Attendant.
Maude is happily employed at the DoubleTree and hopes to further her career and become financially stable enough to move her parents to the U.S. from Haiti.
