Last Wednesday was a challenging and inspiring day at JVS. We spent much of the day visiting classes and re-assuring students that classes wouldn’t end tomorrow and that we would continue to help them learn English, acquire job skills, prepare for college and achieve the American dream. We told them that we’ve been doing this since 1938, and we certainly wouldn’t be stopping now. While we could not guarantee them that their families and friends would not feel the repercussions of the election, we promised them that they would continue to find a safe and welcoming place here, where they can achieve their ambitions and fully utilize their talents.
I think it is fair to say that given the election rhetoric that targeted vulnerable individuals of color, the poor, the disabled, immigrants, refugees, Muslims and many others who walk through JVS’s doors every day, there is a great deal of anxiety among our inspiring clients and staff. Fortunately, we all have a place to come to every day that expresses the values of welcoming, openness, inclusiveness, love, and caring that I believe is the bedrock of America, despite the campaign rhetoric of the President-elect.
As a friend of JVS, you too may be feeling a great deal of anxiety about what the future holds for our nation and our nation’s most vulnerable individuals. We value your friendship today more than ever and thank you for the many ways that you support our work and our clients’ dreams and aspirations. It is my hope that knowing that you are helping to make a difference in the lives of so many individuals who currently feel threatened brings you a measure of solace in these challenging and uncertain times.
If you would like to send a message of support to our clients and staff, please feel free to reply to me, and I will make sure it is shared.
