Tzedek in Action

In 1938, as the Holocaust was unfolding in Europe, the Vocational Serve of Associated Jewish Philanthropies of Boston (now CJP) was founded to assist Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution in Germany. The Vocational Service helped refugees gain skills, find employment, continue careers, and begin to build new lives here in America. The Vocational Service became Jewish Vocational Service in the 1940s.

For over 80 years, JVS has been guided by core values, including welcoming the stranger, Tikkun Olam, and Tzedakah. JVS’s Jewish values inspire and inform our services to people of all backgrounds and identities. Learn more about our Jewish roots below.

Welcoming the Stranger

JVS Boston was built on the Jewish value of welcoming the stranger in our midst. We believe that transformational change starts with an individual.

Many people in our society may feel like a stranger. It is a common experience for new immigrants, individuals with disabilities, those who face racism and discrimination, who struggle with addiction, and who experience a lack of resources.

JVS welcomes people from all backgrounds. We serve refugees and immigrants, individuals with disabilities, and others facing barriers to employment through comprehensive education, training, and job placement services.

Tikkun Olam

Tikkun Olam is the principle of repairing the world. While transformation begins with welcoming an individual, lasting change impacts the lives of job seekers, their families, and future generations, radiating out to neighborhoods and communities.

At JVS, we strive to create a better world for job seekers, their families, and their communities.

We are committed to doing everything we can to repair the world, by helping those in need face setbacks, obstacles, and overwhelming odds. Together, we are doing our part.

Tzedakah

Tzedakah is the value of philanthropy as a form of social justice.

We believe that philanthropy in the spirit of tzedakah is a collaborative action that builds lasting relationships, and benefits all those involved. Our programs thrive with generous support from those in our community.

This form of philanthropy supports the work we do to welcome the stranger in our midst and repair the world, impacting one life at a time.
